New air conditioning equipment installed at London's King's Cross Station for Network Rail
During the course of our work as one of London's premier Air Conditioning installers, Chill Factor Ltd were invited to tender when Network Rail required the replacement of 5 old R22 VRV (Variant Refrigerant Volume) systems with 18 independent split air conditioning units in their King's Cross, London, Signal Server and Communications Room (Power Switch Box). Chill Factor Ltd won the opportunity to work as subcontractor for all the required site work, except electrical services and the procurement of the new air conditioning plant. Chill Factor was also retained as Site Management for the whole project including electrical works, reporting to both the main contractor and to Network Rail Project Management. The overall budget for Chill Factor’s responsibilities, including all other material procurement, (Supporting framework, ancillary equipment and sundries etc.) was £75,000.
Challenging Air-Con installation at busy London Station
The project specification required all work to be completed whilst the signals equipment was operational, ensuring all removal and installation / fitting work was carried out in a completely dust free and minimal noise / vibration free environment. The room itself where the equipment was installed was also physically demanding in that space was at a premium and access was somewhat constricted and had difficult manoeuvrability. Also there was strictly no access to either 115v or 240v power supplies, necessitating all power tools to be battery operated. Further to this, the overall project was very high risk with regard to possible disruption of the Network Rail signal infrastructure. Any incident causing failure to this operational area would have had considerable financial on-costs to Network Rail, the main contractor and Chill Factor, not to mention effects on customers / passengers on the busy King's Cross rail network.
Network Rail compliment our installation safety standards
The project was finished to total customer satisfaction within timescales, ensuring all new plant worked efficiently and providing the room with its correct operating environment. Not only were the Main Contractor and Network Rail happy with the quality of work at final commissioning, but they were especially pleased that Chill Factor was able to work to the high cleanliness standards required. Network Rail was also complimentary about our performance to their strict and demanding Health and Safety operational standards, which were followed to the letter without failure or fuss for the whole of the project’s 5 weeks duration.
